Can anyone recommend a microphone that I can mount somewhere on a car to properly record engine noises?
I’m looking for something with a long cable or maybe wireless.
I’m doing some upgrades to the Skyline GTS-T I have and soon i’ll being doing motorsport again. People at Autocross compliment the car for how good it sounds and I figured i’ll start recording runs and try to record audio properly. Trying to avoid wind noise and need to find a proper place to mount something like that as well.
edit: work internet doesn’t play well with Kinja picture uploads.,..

I believe you actually want to change where your exhaust exits...
Though exit into the cabin may not be a great idea.

I use the Audio Technica atr3350. It’s a great powered one.
I’ve had mine for 3 years. It’s tits!

Do you just mount the mic to the back of the GoPro to reduce the wind noise? I’ve really been wanting to get an external mic for my GoPro too. I’m sick of wind noise in my videos! haha

GoPro audio is uniformly lousy. Most pros I know use something like a zoom recorder with a lavalier mic taped up under the hood. Sync can be a pain unless you can generate a clap near enough to both sources, but most editing programs have pretty good plugins included or available.
Make sure you get a muffler (looks like Trump’s toupee) to minimize wind noise if you are putting it near the pipes or otherwise in airflow

Fuck no. That’s just silly when you have a long lead and can put the mic anywhere on the car

Ah okay. I couldn’t find any specs that stated how long the lead was.

I just ordered one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00…
The reviews seemed pretty good. Best of all it costs only $2.95 more than the overpriced GoPro mini-USB to 1/8” plug adapter. A 20’ cable should be long enough.
At my last track event I mounted my GoPro to the tow hook, which I could screw into either the front or back of my car.
The video quality was awesome and really showed off the speed, but as expected the sound was pretty bad. I also ordered a skeleton case so that I don’t have to drill up the waterproof one the GoPro came with. I’ll have to experiment with mic locations under the hood. For a rear view I’ll just secure the mic in the trunk. My Nameless axleback sits right below it, so that sound should be great. Though with a 20’ cord I could probably put the mic in the trunk even with the camera up front!
I haven’t actually received this mic yet, so I’ll have to follow up once I use it.

if you want to avoid wind noise, get a wind blocker for mcs. one of those little fuzzy things.

DO NOT GET A POLARPRO.

Skeleton case is a huge upgrade for audio alone if you keep the GoPro in the cabin. The waterproof case is just ridiculous. I made the mistake of getting a PolarPro mic that never worked.

When you say powered does that mean it works off the GoPro Battery or not?

Has its own battery (as does the one I just ordered). It’s supposed to improve the audio quality somehow, I think.

Ahhh alright. definitely need to get an upgraded mic. The skeleton case improved audio quality but it's just not quite there yet.
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

Look for a nois cancelling “directional” mic. They only pick up noise from within a cone around whatever they’re pointed at, so it’ll work to eliminate wind noises.
